On the weekend of April 24, 1999, 22 of our number ventured over to Prairie Village, Kansas (just outside of Kansas City) to participate in a special event with the Village Wind Ensemble at The Village Presbyterian Church.
The Village Wind Ensemble is led by Pam Smith Kelly, daughter of the late composer Claude T. Smith. The group is based at Village Presbyterian Church and consists of members of several area churches. They perform at each of these churches throughout the year.
Pam, who was a clinician at last year's Community Band Weekend, invited the AHCB to join with the Village Wind Ensemble in premiering a work by James Swearingen which they had commissioned, and roughly a third of the AHCB was able to make the trip.
Mr. Swearingen's composition is a setting of "Lead On, O King Eternal", and features (in addition to wind ensemble), choir, organ, and antiphonal brass. To sum up: Wow! After Saturday rehearsal, we performed at three services, with Mr. Swearingen conducting, including a live broadcast.
The music performed by the Village Wind Ensemble during the services was:
- Opening Voluntary: All Glory Told (Swearingen)
- Fanfare and Processional Hymn: Praise Ye the Lord Almighty
- Meditation: Deep River (Swearingen; previously commissioned by the Village Wind Ensemble)
- Offertory: Lead On, O King Eternal (Swearingen; commissioned by the Village Wind Ensemble)
- Hymn of the Day: Great is the Faithfulness
- Hymn of Commitment: To God Be the Glory
- Closing Voluntary: All Glory Told - excerpt (Swearingen)
The members of the AHCB would like to thank Pam and Jim Kelly, Jim Swearingen, the members of the Village Wind Ensemble, Director of Music William Baker, and organist Chris Oelkers for letting us participate in a truly memorable experience.
