At the urging of the group, Sandy borrowed some older pieces of music from the Parkway band director and two of the group, Joyce and Ron, quickly cleared an area in their basement to accommodate the band for weekly rehearsals.

Over the summer the band grew to about 17 musicians and by August they gave a short concert for the neighbors in a nearby driveway. At summer's end the band faced another dilemma. They were growing too large for the basement and it was time to return the borrowed music.
